Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Brilliance in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The mood at Lazio's home ground was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had let in ten goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or was there ever a thread holding it together to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, but then he admitted that the management had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were facing for fiscal problems. Speculation that he might quit were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic in their performances as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their first five games, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to ascertain if progress is being made or imploding.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Presence

At least one man remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio this year. He was on the last one with Parma on loan and, early this summer, his owning club were pushing for him to stay there a while longer. The transfer ban forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster with no new signings.

He signed initially under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, almost all of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."

Finding His True Position

Perhaps the manager was persistently working to determine the nature of his skill set. Labeled as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
