The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
