Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
